Recreation #5

Original:

Recreation:

The original was by Claude Cahun; Self Portrait, c. 1927

Without trying to read too much in to the original, I saw it as a question of identity. So, for my recreation I wanted to portray how we are not always who we seem on the outside. Simple as that.

  1. One thing I think that is working well are both of your expressions here. On the one hand you have the self in the mirror that is a little unruly. And then your actual self is very contained. One suggestion I have is I wish that you could somehow edit out the reflection of your ear. It is a little distracting but I know that would be hard.

  2. I really like how you framed the photo. The idea behind the photograph is simple, yet strong. I think if the background of the photograph was a bit less blown out we would have a bit more context and it would be a bit easier to understand. Great photo though!

  3. I like the duality of this photograph. It's kind og like an angry wife screaming at her nonchalant husband. I also see the reflection of your ear in the image on the right hand side. I'm not sure why, but I find it very cool.

  4. The recreation and the idea is cool. I think it works well with the concept you planned.

I think that the expression on the reflection works really nice and the camera placement makes everything work really nice.

However, the reflection is somewhat out of focus. I guess you could try and do two shots of the same photo, one with the focus on your face and one with the reflection focused.

  5. Great way of showing two sides... your face on the left is kind of subtle... and on the right it conveys "normal". Well composed and nice light. The center of the photo is a little distracting... maybe darken that section?

  6. I like the stark white color of this photo. It creates an interesting dynamic combined with the expression on your faces

  7. Very interesting combination of emotions and the reflection of those emotions. I connect very much to this photo. Love how it looks like your ear is spilling out of your mouth like a tongue! Nice work.

  8. the clarity and edgy aspects of you on the right adds to the eeriness of the reflected you. maybe try adding a hazy affect to the reflection or de-saturate it. nice work!

  9. I think you capture the idea of two personalities very well. Overall, it was a very successful image.

  10. I really like how you have a different expression in the mirror. Also, I like that you left in the original reflection and just added the different expression over that so that both are visible.

  11. I really like the clear tone of your photo. Nice composition and also your idea. I think your hair and eye color always work for contrast. Even though I can see your ear, I think it works for your idea.
    Good Job.

  12. Is that a tongue or an ear in your reflection? I can't tell where one begins and the other ends.
